Why is Tim Tebow Such a Big Deal?Tuesday, January 24, 2012 By TJ Cacciola
Tim Tebow is the essence of everything parents try and convey to their kids today. On the field Tebow shows hard work, dedication, sportsmanship and teamwork. Off the field, he proves that you don’t have to give into peer pressure and abuse substance. The most captivating attribute of Tebow has nothing to do with his ability to throw a football, but the way he chooses to live his life. Tim Tebow’s devout Christian beliefs are publicly known and he has become the poster child for messages such as anti- drug abuse to the youth. Tebow time, Tebow Mania, the act of Tebowing, Tim Tebow has also become an absolute media gold mine for reporters and television shows. With this said however, good press does not win you a job in the NFL. Tebow’s legacy in the media was born along with his breakout 2007 season at the University of Florida. In 2007 Tebow became the first sophomore to ever win the Heisman trophy award for most outstanding player in college football. While Tim Tebow’s rise to the top of the social and sports world had just begun, his future team (Denver Broncos) had begun its plummet to mediocrity. Tim Tebow, The monstrous lefty Quarterback from U Florida will go down as one of, if not the greatest, collegiate football players in history. At Florida Tebow often took over the game with the usage of his legs more so than his arm. This is a useful trait in college, but something that is frowned upon by a quarterback in the NFL. In sports it’s often said you don’t need everyone to believe in you, you just need someone to. That’s exactly what the Denver Broncos’ head coach Josh McDaniels did with the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. A move that surprised everyone as they traded a second third and fourth round pick to move up into that position. With this bold first round investment the organization told the world that Tim Tebow was going to be the future of the franchise regardless of what people thought. However, half way through the next season and after one of the Broncos franchise’s worst losing stretches McDaniels was relieved of his position only half way through his contract. With this transgression, the high profile raw QB was seen as the useless bi-product of a failed head coach, and a failed experiment. While experts and analysts cried out saying how Tebow couldn’t compete in the league, his fan base in Denver cried out for a chance. During this past season Broncos starting QB Kyle Orton’s horrid play had everyone jumping on the Tebow bandwagon. With Orton’s 1-4 start to the season, he was out and Tebow was in. Going into his home state of Florida Tebow led his Broncos back from a 15 point deficit in the 4th quarter to bring his team to win in overtime. This dramatic fashion of winning continued in the coming weeks. Tebow finished the season with 6 come from behind wins -- a mark that impressed many but left room for criticism by others. With each passing week more and more, “Tebow haters” jumped ship and got on board with the fact that Tebow could actually play the position in the NFL. However they will never be extinct. Tebow took a Broncos team that looked like their season was lost, and led them into the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, the Broncos defeated the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers and Tebow silenced even more doubters. While the Broncos playoff run did end this past Sunday the season truly was a success for an over achieving Broncos team. Tim Tebow brought a jolt of electricity back to Denver that had not been seen since its last Super Bowl win in 1998. Also there has been no player since the Broncos all-time great QB John Elway to draw so much attention to the mile high city. Tebow set records on the field with his play, and off the field in jersey sales. Along with this, attendance spiked for Denver after announcing Tebow as the starter. Since the great John Elway retired in Denver, no quarterback since has started more than 2 consecutive full seasons. In every aspect of the phrase, Denver has had a revolving door at quarterback. Tebow’s methods at QB may be unorthodox, and disliked by many Football purists, however the numbers tell us he has gotten the job done. Only time will tell what lies ahead for Tim Tebow’s future. As for now Tebow has been reportedly given the keys to the team, and has been announced as next year’s starting QB out of training camp. However that does not mean he is guaranteed to keep the job. In the end his starting job will come down to his own ability to win games.
