Pro Supervision: Watching what you say goes a long wayFriday, February 24, 2012 By Maggie Clark
The fan base for the Cowboys' athletic ranch, more commonly referred to as our “student section,” has grown exponentially over the past few years the years. In a way, the student section resembles the heart of our athletics. Without the constant chants and cheers from the student section, many teams would’ve let their heads down. However, because the fans and students have reached a whole new level of crazy, we’ve been able to immensely motivate our Cowboys and Cowgirls to Conference and even State Championship wins. Although we’re there to motivate our teams, our chants can sometimes get out of hand. No one realizes it, but our principal, Mr. Parker, and our athletic director, Coach Christman, do a fantastic job of monitoring what we say and keepig us under control. Many students become upset and discomforted when one of the two authorities stop us, but ultimately they help us make sure we’re representing Southwest in an appropriate fashion. I personally agree with every decision they make while supervising our student section. If students from other schools are making vulgar comments or chants to either one of our players, we always wonder why their authorities aren’t maintaining control. We look at them as if they have zero class. If we didn’t have people like Mr. Parker and coach Christman, we’d be judged far more than we already are by other schools rather than looked at with respect. Not only do chants crawl inside of players heads, they can also really hurt someone’s feelings. There have been times where the opposing teams’ students get a little too personal when it comes to retaliating against us. I know that when that happens things begin to get way out of hand. We become upset and victimized and all we want is revenge. However, Mr. Parker and Coach Christman make sure we behave appropriately. I know I’m not the only one who appreciates all the things that Mr. Parker and Coach Christman do for our students. Without the monitoring that they’ve done at every game, we would have never gained the respect we did from other schools. They’ve done right by all the students here by keeping a close eye on what we say and how we say it. And after all, we owe it to our amazing sports teams to be the bigger people in every situation and keep ourselves under control. |
