Opposing Views: Separation of church and state - The government is not a church

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 By Aaron Reilly

The separation of church and state is very important for the success of America and politicians should not be allowed to talk about religion when they are campaigning. Many politicians today talk about a higher power influencing them and “telling” them the “right” way. All politicians do is lie to us and play us for fools. When I hear politicians say that gay people are not allowed to be married because the Bible says so, I find that absurd. To be so extremely ignorant and discriminatory is in itself a sin and not realizing it makes one look like a total failure. I know for a fact that the Bible never says word-for-word “people of homosexuality cannot get married.” In recent days, Rick Santorum has questioned President Obama’s “Christian values” in what his policies bring about. I don’t know how Rick Santorum is getting this because nowhere in the Bible does it say “ObamaCare is bad” or “don’t give small businesses tax breaks.” W hat if one day someone was elected who wasn’t of any Christian denomination? What would happen to our nation’s “Christian values”? With the separation of church and state, this is not a problem because “Christian v alues” are never supposed to be one of our nation’s priorities .
