CHS forensics students share talentsWednesday, March 28, 2012 By Spencer Morgan
For the past month and a half, Chilton High School students Jon Kobs and Riley Friederichs have been working hard at the Chilton Area Catholic School (CACS) to prepare the grade school’s own forensics team for competitions. C ACS’ forensics team is a relatively new program, being conceived only three years ago. The program, offered to 5th and 6th grade students, was coached by a teacher at CACS. Unfortunately, she was not available this year, so the school put an item in the Good Shepherd Parish bulletin asking for help from anyone who would be available to help with the team. Friederichs responded, and he also suggested that Kobs would be available to help . Kobs, a junior, and Friederichs, a sophomore, are both involved in the high school forensics team. Kobs performs in the Solo Acting–Serious category, and Friederichs is part of a four person Play Acting group. Kobs was glad that he could help the students learn something so useful. “The skills developed from public speaking are incredibly helpful. Even in high school, those skills come into play.” E very Monday, the two wen t t o CACS and work with the students for nearly two hours, perfecting their pieces and sharing skills that the high school students have learned help them to perform better. O n March 16, Kobs and Friederichs accompanied the students to the GRACE (Green Bay Area Catholic Education) Schools Invitational Forensics Meet, held at No tre Dame Academy in Green Bay . CACS principal Liz Rollmann was thrilled that high school students were willing and able to share their time and resources with the students at the Catholic school. “Our kids look up to Jon and Riley as role models and really valued the time they spent together,” Rollmann said. “We definitely encourage other students to help with this program in the future.” Friederichs said of the experience, “It definitely taught us that we need to be patient, but it also taught us how to be responsible and help other people. It was great to see them evolve in their expressive abilities.” |
