Pentucket Profile

Big Macs

With their win over Sabis International at the DCU Center, the Pentucket Girls’ Basketball team did more than cement the school’s first state title; they cemented a coach’s – and family’s – legacy. The McNamara family name has become synonymous with Pentucket Basketball over the last half-decade; between father John McNamara, and his 3 kids; Erin, Corey, and Kelsi, the family has been the focal point of the successes of the Pentucket Basketball program. Erin, the oldest of the three McNamara children, graduated in 2010 and is the second all-time leading scorer in school history. She was the first of the McNamaras to make a name for themselves by leading her team to a 26-0 mark only before losing in the State Championship Game to Lee High School in her senior year. Then, there is Corey, who is third all-time in scoring, just behind his big sister. While Corey couldn’t muster his team to a deep playoff run, he did manage to pass Mike Iola for first on the scoring list for boys, in just three years at the varsity level. Third in line is little sister Kelsi, who showed signs of her big sister Erin in the State Tournament, hitting three after three in critical moments to swing momentum to the Pentucket bench. And after just her freshman year, she has bragging rights over her siblings, for winning it all. Then of course is the man behind the scenes, Coach McNamara. Even while running between the main gym floor while watching Corey play, to the coach’s office to check Erin’s stat line real time at Southern Maine, he managed to coach the girl’s team to victory, after victory, after victory. And finally, on that Saturday morning in Worchester, Coach Mac got that elusive State Title he had been working for all these years. As Ms. Fichera put it post-game, “No one deserved it more.”
