Celebrities Standing Up For Animal Rights

Thursday, April 12, 2012 By Courtney W.

The sad but true story of Vucko the dog has become known to the world. Two intoxicated teens in Bosnia duct-taped fireworks into the innocent dogs mouth and lit them. Vucko was left alone to wander for five days, as maggots were eating away at the raw flesh of the dog’s mouth. After authorities found Vucko, he had to be euthanized as veterinarians were unable to perform reconstructive surgery. The two teens did not receive any consequences. In Bosnia, animal rights are basically non-existent. This cruel and violent act upset everyone around the world, creating petitions everywhere. The petition in Bosnia asks the Bosnian government to draft stronger animal cruelty laws, in hopes of preventing others from doing the same in the future. The current laws in Bosnia simply are not enough to protect these innocent animals, and it definitely needs to change. Celebrities are standing up for animal rights as well. Ellen Degeneres is an example of someone who stands up for their rights, with The Gentle Barn. The Gentle Barn is an emergency and nonemergency home and shelter for animals that have been abused. Ellen Degeneres is a follower of The Gentle Barn and adopted two cows, Holy and Madonna. For more information about The Gentle Barn, follow the link below: http://www.gentlebarn.org/index.php Another example of a celebrity who stands up for animal rights is Woody Harrelson. Just over a year ago, Harrelson sent a letter to PETA urging officials of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to end a plan that would force fourteen retired chimpanzees back into medical testing labs. Once again, Woody Harrelson is sending out letters in support of legislation that would permanently end the suffering for great apes. The last main example is Lea Michelle. This Glee star is a huge animal rights activist and has been supporting the banning of horse-drawn carriages in New York City. The star has put her foot down and threatened not to return to the Big Apple if the horses are forced to be put through the harsh weather. She is taking a stand against what she believes is wrong! As you can see, animals rights is a touchy subject to many and standing up for animals is the right thing. They deserve freedom and to be treated as humans are. I hope the teens who abused Vucko the Dog receive punishment for their horrible actions, as many others do as well.
