The Press Democrat Service to the Community AwardsMonday, April 23, 2012 By Erica Charlton
During the last week of March, a group of high school seniors from around Sonoma County had the honor of collecting at the Fountain Grove Inn. A total of twenty schools, with 135 students, had the honor of being represented at The Press Democrat ’s Service to the Community Awards interviews. This award is broken down into ten categories every year, with high school counselors nominating one student in each category. The students who were selected from Montgomery are Laura Walters (agriculture), Joey Abrego (performing arts), Erica Charlton (journalism/media), Roman Alcocer (community action), Eric Liang (foreign language), Emma Weinberger (math), Ryan Hodge (health sciences) and Anthony Louie (music). Each student was interviewed by a panel of people who had some connection with the category they were nominated in. The interviews lasted ten minutes, and at the end of the day, the interviewers select who from the twenty schools best represents the core idea of their category. It is a very prestigious award, and each student should feel honored for the opportunity. The awards will be presented on May 2 nd , so until then, wish each of the students good luck! |
