DaVinci's Notebook
Ms. SlotterTuesday, April 24, 2012 By Shayleigh Harris
Many of you know Mrs. Slotter as just your ordinary math or advisory/enrichment teacher, but did you know she actually has an extraordinary life outside of school? During the summer Mrs. Slotter loves to travel the globe. With Europe as one of her favorites, and common destinations, she decided to switch it up, and plans on visiting Italy to base jump this summer. Along with base jumping, Mrs. Slotter enjoys speed flying and sky diving. She has been sky diving for about seven years, base jumping for three years, and speed flying for four years. "I was introduced to base jumping by a friend in Pennsylvania," said Mrs. Slotter. About seven years ago, Mrs. Slotter also began learning how to fire dance. "It's where you use a single staff and a hula hoop." She mostly carries out this hobby by performing in her backyard, music festivals, and "basically everywhere." Last year, Slotter joined a roller derby team, but is a little hesitant on it this year. "I'm debating on whether or not to do rock climbing or roller derby, but if i do join roller derby it will be sometime this winter," said Mrs. Slotter. Some of you may already know, but for those of you who don't, Mrs. Slotter got married over Christmas break. Her ceremony was held in Hawaii on the beach. "It was a very spiritual and traditional Hawaiian wedding." Instead of exchanging wedding rings, they exchanged leis. Slotter has known her newlywed for six years. Her family consists of herself, her husband, step-daughter, and two dogs: Hokuli'i and Hugo. When asked if she was going to have kids of her own she replied with a "No!" Mrs. Slotter is originally from Pennsylvannia, but moved to Hawaii when she was offered her first teaching job. Later, she moved to California to be closer to her boyfriend who is now her husband. During the recession in California, teachers were being layed off by the thousands, so Slotter took the matter into her own hands and began applying for teaching jobs online. New Year's Eve, she received a phone call from DaVinci Academy that she was hired and would start in six days. Slotter has now lived in Utah for about four years. While teaching at DaVinci, Slotter has covered taught math, physics, and astronomy. She is also an AVID advisor. Along with teaching, she also took her part in the theater by playing a role in A Christmas Carol here at school. Mrs. Slotter plans to stay at DaVinci a little while longer and plans on hopefully becoming a teacher for teachers and a higher rank AVID advisor. Lately, Slotter has started working with essential oil healing on her free time although most of her week and time consists on grading papers and preparing lessons. "Cooking. One hobby I allow myself to do everyday. I love to cook!" "Teaching is my favorite thing to do," commented Slotter. When asked what was one thing her students have taught her she said, "Humor goes a long way." |
