Taking the next step

Friday, May 04, 2012 By Jennifer Currier

At the beginning of the second semester, the cafeteria windows started to fill with pictures. These pictures, displaying the smiling faces of members of the senior class, are labeled with the names of various colleges and universities that the students have been accepted to. Some pictures have the names of a branch of the armed forces. Pembroke Academy isn’t simply showing off its graduating class. The school is proud of its graduates. The “Taking the Next Step” display is a visual representation of what life beyond high school can be. Whatever that “next step” involves, finding something to do after graduation is of the utmost importance. As the pictures show, most students have chosen different paths, and rightfully so. The objective of the display isn’t to urge students to attend a four-year college. The pictures are simply meant to show that the school is supportive of each student’s post-graduation plans, whatever they may be. The seniors are in the midst of making one of the biggest decisions of their lives. Between the failing economy, thoughts of moving away from home and choosing a career path, confronting the future is frightening. I know because my picture’s on that wall. By publicly recognizing the students who have completed this task, though, PA is setting an example for the rest of the student body while reminding us that though the future is scary, the school is there to guide and support us. So congratulations to the members of the Class of 2012, whether your picture is on the cafeteria wall or not. Whatever you do, know—and see—that PA is proud of you and encouraging you to “take the next step.”
