Student passion sewn on a national level

Making Glendale history, senior Alicia Pry is the first GHS student ever to go to Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Nationals for fashion design. Not only this, but Pry is the only student in Springfield Public Schools to go to Orlando, Fla., to compete with the best July 8-12. Creating fashion pieces has been part of Pry’s family for as long as she can remember. “We’ve always had sewing machines around the house,” Pry said. “My mom has been doing it since before I was born.” The competition, however, relies on more than just a fashion-minded imagination and skill with a sewing machine. “They look at all the projects alone, then we come in and give a speech on our techniques and what we used. It’s a third for display, a third for speech, and a third for dress,” Pry said. At regionals in February, every competitor received a gold, allowing each person to go to state. Pry was nervous for stiff competition ahead. “When I was behind the curtain, my heart was just beating as fast as it can. I wasn’t even sure they called my name for the right thing. I was so nervous.” But Pry’s nerves didn’t affect her performance; nationals are waiting for her. While it started with making a pair of pajama pants in class like every other student, Pry has made everything from shorts to dresses, and even wears her fashion items to school. “My mom has already offered to give me one of her sewing machines that I can keep through college and ever how long I want. I will keep doing it forever.”
