The Beckman Chronicle

Another Collaboration... Except with Superheroes

In the beginning of May, four main heroes- Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor joined forces with Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Nick Fury to form The Avengers. This collaboration has been anticipated ever since Marvel films started being produced more than a few years ago, and generally managed to stay true with most of the cast in this movie. After almost five years of various Marvel adventures, was The Avengers well worth the wait? Taking place soon after the events in Thor, Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) brother Loki Tom Hiddleston) successfully invades Earth to complete his invasion. In retaliation Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) gathers The Avengers, who at first display poor teamwork to eventually deliver the typical good-guy-always-wins ending. The Avengers overall was very action intensive and comedic. In fact, it had more of both the aforementioned aspects than other Marvel films. Seeing The Avengers grow together as a group in a two-hour time frame was very impressive, although there were too many funny scenes when it was just not necessary. Further, there was a relatively good balance between the screentime of each hero, except for the more minor characters like the Black Widow and Hawkeye, who do not wear colorful suits like the others. Another piece of the movie that really got me engaged was the effects. Seeing Captain America and Thor back-to-back while throwing their projectiles exceeded expectations. My only complaint is that Hawkeye has no real superpower, and he did not shine as much as I personally had hoped; all he wore was a black suit and black bow -- not even close to how he is originally seen in the comics. So far The Avengers is quite possibly the best Marvel film of the decade, if not the most eventful one. The best action scenes are actually the ones in which The Avengers undergo internal conflicts and fight one another simply because it is essentially superhero versus superhero. What is good about this film is that the story does not require the viewer to watch the previous films as prerequisites, but doing so would definitely enhance the experience. In any case, Marvel still continues to impress me and I am personally looking forward to the upcoming Spiderman film. (4 stars out of 5)
