The Oarsman
A fun and groovy musicalMonday, May 21, 2012 By Monica Lorenzo
Venice High students presented a lively performance of school musical "On Broadway: A Musical Revue," which premiered on Friday, April 27th. "On Broadway: A Musical Revue" was composed of a variety of past musicals performed at Venice, all in one show. The show opened with the whole cast singing soulfully to the song from the musical "Rent," "Seasons of Love." Afterwards, the cast broke into different groups, playing various characters from other famous musicals. Act One included the musicals "Grease," "Cabaret," "Annie," and "Legally Blonde;" Act Two consisted of "Westside Story," "Chicago," and "Little Shop of Horrors." The cast sang and danced with passion, emotion, and energy, with fun songs such as "Grease Lightning" (from the hit musical "Grease") and "America" (from "West Side Story") and the romantic song "Now I Have Everything" (from "Fiddler on the Roof"), sung by seniors Madeleine Pla and Gerardo Llamas. Llamas, who played multiple characters in the musical, said his favorite character to play was Edna from "Hairspray," because she was someone he could make fun of. In addition to their singing and dancing, the cast did an impressive job with their acting. They showed enthusiasm portraying their characters, whether they're Elle Woods from "Legally Blonde" or Danny Zucko from "Grease." The cast's costumes also looked fabulous and truly captured the appearance of the characters. Costumes included the cool, black leather jackets and pink-purple blouses the cast wore in "Grease" and the raggedy dresses from "Annie." "It was exciting," said freshman Pema Yangden, who was one of the dancers in the musical. "It's an experience that I want to do again." "On Broadway" truly embraced the music, fun, and drama from the various musicals. Though there wasn't a consistent plot, the bits and pieces of what was memorable from those musicals made "On Broadway" stand out on its own and a show that no one should forget. |
