Cry of the Hawk
Invasion of British boysMonday, June 04, 2012 By HELEN GRAFTON
A number one album. A worldwide tour. Thousands of screaming girls and adoring fans. What more could a boy want? After participating in the United Kingdom’s version of The X Factor as solo artists and failing to make the cut, it was suggested that the five boys should be combined into one group and thus, One Direction was formed. Since then, they placed third on The X Factor and have become one of the most popular bands in the world. Made up of five boys, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, they have worked their way to the top of the charts and into the hearts of girls all over the world. Girls love that they have been able to watch this band grow from the very beginning. The band has multiple hilarious videos on YouTube that they have been recording since the beginning of The X Factor . Their first album Up All Night went straight to the number one position in America. They were the first British group to do this with their debut album. Although it may seem as though tween girls are the only one who may be interested in One Direction, this is certainly not the case. “I love their accents and the fact that their singing is different from other bands nowadays,” said freshman Katie Bemb. Bemb heard about One Direction through a friend who video chats with a girl in England. “I looked them up and was like ‘Oh my gosh! I love this,” said Bemb. The reason they rose to fame so fast is only partially reliant on the singing. The accents and the hair is what really gets the girls screaming. Think of One Direction as a newer version of *NSYNC with British accents, or even a modern day Beatles. Fans can catch One Direction on their tour at the Patriot Center in Fairfax Virginia on May 24. “Directioners” can also find them on their 2013 summer tour in places like Washington D.C. or Hershey Park, Pennsylvania. Their straight to DVD movie, Up All Night: The Live Tour was recently released on May 29 and is available for purchase. |
