Culbert Moves to Croatia

Monday, June 04, 2012 By Sammie Adas

After three years of teaching at Briar Woods High School, chemistry teacher, Katherine Culbert will not be returning next year due to a once in a lifetime chance to teach in Croatia. Luckily for Culbert, English is the language used at the school where she will be teaching the next school year. Most people in Croatia speak English which will make it easier for her to make new friends since she doesn’t know anyone there besides a few Facebook friends that are teachers at the school. Culbert will continue to teach in the same field of study, chemistry, with an addition of math and physics classes that are International Baccalaureate courses. Traveling Europe has always been a dream of Culbert’s, although she has already been to 12 European countries; she hopes to travel to every single one. The location change will most likely make that goal more achievable. Still such a big life change is bound to be somewhat bittersweet. Culbert stated that the biggest thing she would miss is the people at Briar Woods. “I’ll especially miss hanging out in the attendance office with Mrs. [Kerri] Calder, but she promised to Skype with me,” said Culbert. Her students have also expressed their thoughts on Culbert’s move out of the country. “I’m happy for Ms. Culbert,” said junior, Kristin Haufler, “but I will really miss her next year she has been such a good teacher and friend.” Culbert’s contract is only for two years, but she has also made it clear that if she enjoys her time in Croatia she is in no hurry to return to the United States.
