South Lyon Kite Fest

Every year for the past four years at James F. Atchison Memorial Park there has been the annual South Lyon Kite Festival; this event brings families from all over the city together. On Saturday, June 2 the forth-annual South Lyon Kite Fest took place. The event was from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Admission was free and children could take home free kites. Just over 3,000 people attended the event. The South Lyon Kite Festival was enjoyable and entertaining for children of all ages. The Kite Fest had several great activities for families to participate in. For young children there was kite decorating and a petting zoo. There was live musical performance by an Elvis impersonator and a karate demonstration from Han's Tae Kwon Do Academy. Also included in the day’s events were a parade, kite performances, face painting, Zumba dance demonstration, balloon animals and a treasure hunt. The kite performance was by The Windjammers. At the kite fest there were several competitions. One competition being the barbeque cook off where restaurants all over the town came to compete in who could create the best pulled pork. The other was the kite-coloring contest, when children designed their own kites. There were several drawings for prizes like gift cards to local stores and restaurants. Another cool prize was that a winner from the drawing could earn a monopoly game that is based off South Lyon. The weather was perfect for kite flying. The wind was strong enough for the huge kites, but not strong enough to blow away children’s kites. The weather was slightly chilly at the top of the park when the wind was factored in, but the event was highly enjoyable. The sun mostly stayed hidden behind the clouds but every once an awhile would appear. The South Lyon Kite Fest was a fun, fantastic and satisfactory. The event was a great way to spend a Saturday for South Lyon residents. What was wonderful about the event was that people all over the area not just South Lyon residents joined in on the entertainment and fun. The forth-annual South Lyon Kite Fest was pleasurable and will hopefully be as great for years to come.
