In school sports news, Senior Josh Schultz has signed with the University of Montana Western, and will be a Bulldog next fall. Josh was a four year starter for Stevensville, and was named All-State three times. He was chosen to play in an All Star game that only one other Yellow Jacket had been selected to all time. Josh was the captain of the basketball team for three years, and was clearly the go to guy for his entire career. He averaged over 16 points per game for three years, and hit a game winner verse AA Hellgate during his senior year.
Josh wore #23 during his career, which is associated with Michael Jordan. You could've connected the two watching Josh play, as he was a pure scorer, and was lights out from the 3 point line. When watching Jacket basketball, on a missed shot, an outlet pass would be thrown to Josh's little brother Jared, who would lead the fast break, and find an open Josh in the corner who would knock down the three. Josh was efficient, and was definitely game planned against by other teams.
When Josh was asked what the hardest part about high school ball was, he said, "gaining confidence my freshman year." The best part, Josh said, was "playing with my brother Jared." When I asked Josh why he chose Western, he responded, "I chose Western because it's a little closer to home, and it just felt like home." Josh said, "besides Western, my other choice was Havre." I asked him if he planned on starting next year at Western, and Josh replied "No, I'd like to redshirt actually."
Jared Schultz joined the conversation and had this to say, "the one thing I loved about playing with Josh was that you could always count on him for knocking down a key shot, no matter what the score is, he keeps on battling."
During Josh's 4 years at SHS we saw him go from a role player off the bench, to an elite scorer carrying his team. Josh has grown as a basketball player, but also as a person. If you don't know Josh, get to know him. He's a great person who puts God and his family over everything. He is the most humble kid in the high school, and that's exactly what Western is getting. What a great pick up for Western, as I easily see Josh becoming an asset to that team. Good luck Josh!
