James Blunt, "All the Lost Souls"
Grade A- -
Friday, November 09, 2007 By Rachel Sanabria
No, James Blunt did not disappear off the face of the earth; he's back with All The Lost Souls, released September 17th, 2007. Although the album features the same distinct, unconventionally incredible voice, not much else is similar to Blunt's first album Back To Bedlam. Not that it doesn't feature the same mellow, emotional sound-- it's simply far more polished.
You may remember the annoyingly repetitive and simple "You're Beautiful" from Blunt's last album. Fortunately, the songs on this album are far better and more complex. The first and only single so far off All The Lost Souls is "1973" which has done very well on the billboard chart so far. It's a rather generic piano piece with an extremely catchy bass line; definitely single material. It's songs like "I'll Take Everything", and "Give Me Some Love" that deserve to be singles.
"I'll Take Everything" has such a repetitive piano triple-it throughout the whole song but yet it somehow manages to be refreshing and sound quite original. Everything about "Give Me Some Love" is classic. It's the type of song that people will remember decades from now. The verses are quiet and emotional but the chorus just comes blaring loud and blunt (no pun intended), the only word to describe this song is classic. "One of the Brightest Stars" is the kind of song that could easily be placed in some sort of uplifting movie, it tells your typical rags to riches story.
You can expect the rest of the album to be slow, ballad-like (reminiscent of "Goodbye My Lover"), and relatable. All The Lost Souls features everything we love about James Blunt amplified, and everything we don't quite like lowered. It's an essential album for 2007. Expect much more buzz about All the Lost Souls in the next couple of months.
