Two CHS students check out a sign advertising the new wind ensemble. -
Campbellsport High School is looking for students to join wind ensemble and show their musical talent.

Starting in late November, students will have the chance to join a musical group where they can have an opportunity to play an instrument, even if they can’t fit band in their schedule.

There are many students that wanted to have the opportunity to join band but were unable to do so because of their scheduling. Michael Hebert, the high school band instructor, wanted to give them a chance to play by creating a wind ensemble. Hebert’s thought is that students should not have to miss out on musical education because of any other school sports or activities. The wind ensemble came about because many of the CHS Band students had a commitment that Hebert wanted to loosen.

If students have played in band before and want to join wind ensemble it is recommended that they play the instrument they already know how to play. If they have never played in band before, they may start with drum or sleigh bells. Then, if the student picks up on the music fairly quickly, they may have the opportunity to play snare or quads in the wind ensemble.

“There are three genres of music that we will be playing,” says Hebert, “Christmas music, Pep Band music, and a concert piece for Chicago as well as Solo and Ensemble.” The wind ensemble will help the band lead Santa up to the school in the Christmas Walk. Throughout the season of basketball, the wind ensemble will be playing Pep Band music at basketball games as well.

“We would like to have as many students as possible, though we only have four bass drums,” says Hebert. If students are interested in joining wind ensemble, they should talk to Hebert for more information. Practices will be held on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:30 – 8:15 before school from late November to mid December and the end of January through mid March. The first practice will be held on Monday, November 26th.
