For the second year in a row, Sunrise Mountain has claimed the title of quiz bowl champions, after winning the state-wide SkillsUSA quiz bowl competition April 19.
The winning team included seniors Marcus Roberts, Kevin Leung, Blake Saltman, Ryan Gonzales and Jacob Anderson.
“We did a lot of studying as a team,” Roberts said. “Based on last year, we were definitely more prepared.”
Roberts says it was a close competition, especially in the first round when the team almost did not make it through.
“It was pretty intense,” Roberts said. “In the last round, we really had to play consistently, because you lose points every time you miss a question.”
Two separate Sunrise Mountain teams competed against the state to win the title, and although freshman Gabriel Yap’s team did not win, he is happy for the winning team and enjoyed the competition.
“It was very fun, we knew a lot of things [and] we also learned a lot of things,” Yap said. “If you contribute, you feel like you’re a part of the team.”
Last year, the team placed 13 at nationals, which took place in Kansas City, Mo. This year’s winning team will once again return to Kansas City from June 19-24 to compete against the best of the nation.
“I really hope they do well, but most of all I hope they take with them a great experience,” SkillsUSA Advisor Steven Decker said.
