On Memorial Day, there was a massive forest fire in Quebec, which sent smoke all the way down to Northern New York. Over 50 separate forest fires were reported, and 8 of them were not able to be controlled. While homes have been evacuated in areas near the fires, no homes have been damaged, and no major injuries have been reported. There were at least 1200 firefighters fighting the fires. The fires were ignited after a May 25th thunderstorm, and over 100,000 acres of forest have been destroyed. The smoke was even reported as far as Jefferson and Franklin counties. St. Lawrence County was greatly affected, as the smoke was heavy on Monday, May 31st. In some areas, visibility was low. The United States National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for Northern Vermont and New Hampshire, and people with respiratory problems were asked to stay indoors as much as possible. However, the smoke has cleared in Ogdensburg. The wind shifted on Tuesday, June 1st, which allows for cleaner air for St. Lawrence County, as the smoke is sent back to the north.
