A superhero is a child’s favorite memory. Playing with action figures, watching cartoons, and even playing video games about these characters is something everyone can look back on. When Marvel Comics announced a feature film of its "Avengers" heroes, these memories reemerged.

Joss Whedon, critically acclaimed writer of series such as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Astonishing X Men," directed Marvel’s "The Avengers." One of the most ambitious superhero films ever made, Avengers is a combination of multiple previous films. Marvel first produced "Thor," "Iron Man," "The Hulk," and "Captain America: The First Avenger," in order to create origin stories for each member of their titular Avengers superhero team. "The Avengers" is a sequel to four different movies, bringing together over four years of work for Marvel.

Whedon’s film satisfies on all levels. Every actor present is in top form. Film veteran Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Iron Man. He does the character justice. Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and more add to the stellar cast. Unfortunately, certain characters are not given nearly as much screen time as others. Mark Ruffalo in particular, who plays Bruce Banner/The Hulk, is an incredible addition to the movie, but is not afforded the screen time he deserves. This is a small complaint to the otherwise fantastic film.

Avengers could easily lead into more successful careers for each of its main actors. While Robert Downey Jr. is already famous, his co-actors have not had such an illustrious career. Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and more are sure to move up in the film industry.

The music and effects of the film are also powerful. The movie is very effects-centered, but this makes sense as it is the only way to show off the power of a superhero. This is not a visual showcase, but an effective use of technology. The film’s music is well done, and each song adds power to the many battle scenes. Every aspect of the movie was given considerable care.

Comic fans can rejoice, because Avengers does not stray entirely from its comic book roots. The film draws influences from many of the original comics and their spin-offs. Whedon is clearly a fan of comics, as elements of many previous series are present.

The film may not have succeeded if it followed the exact storyline of the original Avengers comics, however many may say otherwise. Those who have kept up with Marvel trends will enjoy what the company has created. In traditional Marvel fashion, the script-writers added a post-credits scene, which is sure to excite comic fans.
