Last Wednesday the Arrowhead varsity football squad suffered a defeat to long time rival Mukwonago 49-21.
The first quarter of play was fairly neutral with both teams bringing its score to 7. After Jim Landwehr’s massive 70-yard catch, the Hawks capitalized as Drew Volkmann finished the drive for a TD run. Mukwonago would score off a drive to tie the score.
Unfortunately, the second quarter didn’t favor the Arrowhead side. Poor defense gave Mukwonago two touchdown passes and a TD run. The thought of a win quickly disappeared with the score 35-7 at half.
“Heading into the half, I just kept thinking that we can’t give up,” Jason Jankowski said.
The Hawks kept hacking away in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough. Quarterback John Schuster threw a pair of interceptions and Mukwonago capitalized on the opportunities. However, Ben Hackbart and Volkmann both answered back before the quarter’s end to bring the score to 42-21 in the favor of Mukwonago.
Mukwonago, the top ranked team in the state, finished the Hawks with another TD in the fourth quarter. The win gave Mukwonago the conference title.
“It was a disappointing loss,” Jankowski said. “There really aren’t any words to measure it.”
As far as the playoffs are concerned, Arrowhead has a long way to go.
“We need to rebuild our confidence,” Jankowski added. “We’ve got to head into the playoffs fired up.”
