At-a-glance

It seems that with the more video gaming technology “evolving” at such a fast pace, role playing gamers appear to have forgotten the roots of RPGs. These roots are table top RPGs.

Table top role playing is the old-school way to play an RPG. All you really need to play is dice, .encils, paper, players, and most important creativity. The basics are simple. “Dungeons and Dragons Version 1.0” is the most notorious table top role playing games.

Creating a character takes some time, as it is almost completely customizable. You roll the dice to determine your statistics for your character. Statistics determine how your character will function.  Say you roll the dice for low strength score such seven you will not be able to kick down a door blocking you progress, however should you have rolled a higher number like sixteen you could kick down the door with ease. If you have a high charisma you could try to bargain with a shopkeeper and others. However the low charisma may cause people to think to find you repulsive. The other primary stats are Dexterity which determines agility reflexes and balance, constitution covers defense, and resistance. Intelligence effects how smart you are, such as learning certain things better or faster. Wisdom determines how you can make decisions. Take note that the different species of playable characters can change your stats good for the and bad.

After “rolling up” a character, there are a variety of classes available. Your stats will affect what kind of class you want to use. Using a character with a low strength stat with a fighter is not a good idea. But having a good dexterity would be perfect for a thief and other speed classes. Determining class is a big factor of your success in this new world.

Sadly Table-top RPGs are becoming less popular now that video games are so popular. People don’t seem to realize that role playing does not make you a nerd. Those thoughts may scare some potential players away. Playing games like these can help you mentally learn along with having fun. Don’t forget that you can have more than two people playing at a time; you can play with tons of friends. I suggest trying it with about four friends at first, and then if you like it you can play it more.
