The girls' basketball team improved on last year's record by going 17-8 overall and 8-2 in the MBL, which was good enough for second place.

The team was seeded #1 in the CCS Division I playoffs. Unfortunately, they lost to Gilroy 64-62 in the semi-finals. “It seemed that everything that could go wrong for us did, and everything that could go right for them did too, unfortunately for us,” said Coach Battaglini.

The team graduates four seniors: Mieshel Bacon, Mayra Barocio, Rosa Mejia, and Yuritzi Perez. However, eight players return including co-MVPs Janet Oseguera and Marly Ongy, along with Vanessa Shaw, Kayla Alonzo, Celia Garcia, Ana Donate, Jackie Montenegro, and Esther Juarez.

The future looks even brighter for next year thanks to the JVs who went undefeated in league and freshmen with a record of 9-1.

Battaglini felt good about all three levels. “It was a great group of girls to work with. They were a very close- knit group."

The team hopes to use the disappointment of losing in the playoffs as motivation for next year. "Next year we want two banners; one for league and one for CCS," said Janet Oseguera and Celia Garcia.

Boys' Basketball

The Alisal boys’ varsity basketball team had its ups and downs this season. It started off with a big 6-0 record but fell to a 16-12 overall record by the end of the season.

Coach Gil said that this season was a, “learning season,” for the boys.

The Trojans, seeded number 8, made it to the CCS playoffs. They played number 9 seeded, Santa Teresa. The Trojans went into overtime and eventually beat Santa Teresa 78-71. They then had to face number one seed Piedmont Hills. Unfortunately, the Trojan basketball season heard its final buzzer against Piedmont Hills.

The starting seniors include: Jamie Castro, David Carriedo, and Christopher Gibson. The returning players for next year will include: Francisco Esquivel, Pepe Higuera and Adrian Rodriguez, all of whom are junior presently.

“Champions are made in the off-season,” said Jaime Castro. During the off-season, Coach Gil will work on the players in open gym and he will also take them to camps.

Boys' Soccer

While the coach changed the level of excellence remained for the boys’ soccer team. The boys finished with a 16-2-5 overall record and were league champions with a 7-0-3 record.

Sanchez was stressed out at the beginning of the year due to the probation CCS had placed on the team, which would have prevented the team from participating in the playoffs if anyone received a red card.

“I’m very proud of this year’s effort due to the obstacles we had to overcome,” said Coach Sanchez.

The team graduates eight seniors, but returns twelve players including David Estrada, Ramon Hernandez, Pedro Morales, and Michael Regalado from this year’s squad.

Next year’s squad will be young but talented. “I think it’s a rebuilding year,” says Sanchez. “A lot of young players have to step up.” He plans on being more aggressive next year since the threat of probation will be off the team. “I blame our two losses on a lack of aggressiveness because we were afraid of getting a red card. But next year we’re going to get after people,” said Sanchez.

Girls' Soccer

The girls’ soccer team had an outstanding season, winning their first ever MBL Championship. Their overall record was18-3 and their league record was 9-1. “The season was great,” said senior Griselda Ramirez. The returning seniors were: Mayra Gomez, Griselda Ramirez, Carmela Velasquez, and Jessica Ochoa.

The varsity team was also composed of a lot of young players who played an important role in the team’s season. The team was led by sophomore Mayra Cruz who was the leading scorer with more than thirty goals, after returning form a knee injury. She was also Co-MVP for the league. Thanks to the girls’ historic effort, the post-season awards rolled in. Three girls were named to the MBL 1st team All-League honors: Carmela Velasquez, Mayra Cruz, and Griselda Ramirez. In addition, the following four seniors were placed on the All-Star team: Mayra Gomez, Carmela Velasquez, Griselda Ramirez, and Jessica Ochoa. Finally, two players, Mayra Cruz and Griselda Ramirez, made it on the Califonian’s All-County Team.

Second year coach Arturo Figueroa, who led the team to their first MBL title, was chosen by the Californian as Coach of the Year.

Wrestling

The Alisal wrestling team had a successful season this year. Second year coach Juan Cabrera and his two assistant coaches, Manuel Valle and Jose Julio Garcia, helped the team finish second in the MBL.

This year’s team was very young; composed mainly of freshman and sophomores and only two seniors. There were twelve wrestlers who made it to CCS. One wrestler, senior Miguel Garcia, made it to state. He placed twenty-fourth in his weight division. He also won the league tournament.

“Alisal wrestling had a great season. The team is young and will only graduate two seniors, state qualifier Miguel Garcia and “Mouse” Jose Ramos,” said Cabrera.

This year, the team also had a female wrestler. Her name was Claudia Martinez. Not only was she the only girl on the team, but she was the first in the school’s history to make it to CCS. “She worked very had to try not to get pinned,” says Cabrera. “She was fearless when she stepped upon the mat, she would give all she had, and a little more.”

This summer, the coaches plan to send the team to a wrestling camp. After this, they want to become league champions. “We are looking to place in state next year as a team. We want to comeback with a state medal so we can qualify for nationals,” said Cabrera.
