The National Art Honor Society has had a busy last quarter, and they aren’t through yet. Recently Catonsville’s NAHS successfully completed their charity event, Empty Bowls Sharing, and the fun family event, the Edible Art Show.

Empty Bowls Sharing

Empty Bowls Sharing is a nationwide charity event that has been in Maryland for 6 years, and all 6 years the National Art Honor Society has been on board.

Run by a charity called ‘St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore,’ Empty Bowls Sharing is a family event orchestrated every year at various locations in Baltimore. This year’s location was the Timonium Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 24 2012.

Soups are donated from some of the local Baltimore restaurants for people to eat after they’ve picked from the wide variety of handcrafted bowls also donated to the event by local artists. Artists and craftsman alike are encouraged to participate by donating bowls that are picked by the customers to put their soup in and take home.

Participants could choose between a lunch seating from 12:00 to 2:30 PM or a dinner seating from 6:00 to 7:30 PM- all on the same Saturday. They also must pay for their tickets ($20 per person, children under 5 are free), but it’s completely worth it.

The purpose of the event is to raise money and awareness for people who are hungry and homeless in our community. It also hosts entertainment, including face painting, a children’s magic show, raffles, learn the process of making bowls out of clay, and a reception for adults on the Friday night before the event.

Tickets sold out for this event, understandably so, and nearly 1700 people were in attendance across all three gatherings, a record-breaking number.

And our students in the NAHS broke their own record this year by making a total of 82 bowls to donate to the event, the highest they’ve ever created. CHS, in addition to a lot of other schools and independent artists, worked hard to make this event possible- kudos to them.

Every student in NAHS participated by making at least one bowl, and even though they worked very hard- a lot of CHS students (including myself) didn’t get a chance to appreciate it or participate themselves because they never heard of this event.

..But, now you know! Feel free to participate next year as an artist, a buyer, or both.

Keep your eyes peeled for Empty Bowls Sharing next year!

Edible Art Show

The Edible Art Show is a fun family event that takes place every year in Catonsville High School’s cafeteria from 5:00 to 7:00 PM- and this was the 18
th show.

Many people participated in the 18
th Annual Edible Art Show on March 28th (102 entries were submitted) and many more attended to sample the fantastic works of culinary art.

From giant alligator cakes to shark cakes to an elaborate recreation of a food version of Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night,’ the Edible Art Show pretty much does it all. Not only students from the NAHS participated either, although Sophomore Rachel Leonard, one of the NAHS officers-in-training for next year, reported that “most members in NAHS participated.”

Leonard herself created a gingerbread version of the balloon house from Disney’s
Up- using gingerbread for the house and cupcakes for the balloons.

Not just high school students participate, however- elementary school kids, middle school kids, and even parents get involved in this fun family event, for some, it’s even a tradition.

“It brings faculty together,” detailed National Art Honor Society teacher advisor, Windy Spiridigliozzi, “and kids and the community in general. It’s a wonderful family event, and we get a lot of participation.”

After all of the viewing of the entries and judging has ended, artists and bystanders alike dig into the culinary masterpieces.

Join in on the fun and the food next year!

Mural Painting

On the back of the M&T Bank on Frederick Road, facing Bloomsbury Avenue, the National Art Honor Society will be participating in the painting of a mural directed by an artist.

First of all, it’s NAHS students only and it will be taking place sometime in May, completely after school with the times and dates dictated by the artist in charge, Edward Williams.

For the most part in the beginning they’ll just be cleaning and priming the walls with local businesses providing food and drinks to the NAHS participants. Which is good, because in the words of Mrs. Spiridigliozzi the mural is going to be “
huge.”
It will take roughly a month to complete, and $6,000 needs to be raised in donations before they even get to start on the mural, but they’re already past halfway to that goal.

The finished product, designed by Edward Williams alongside a team of other residents, will definitely be worth the money and effort, however, to make Catonsville a prettier and more colorful place.

And may NAHS continue to be active through the rest of the year and into the next school year!
