Mr. Steven DiStefano, principal at UEHS, said he supports students in their efforts to save U-E’s teachers in light of recent proposals to eliminate or cut staff and programs.

Because of proposed budget cuts, a handful of teachers — among them many respected, veteran teachers — were notified recently that they might be laid off or reduced to part time status next school year.

Students, in response to these measures, have organized online and have planned a series of protests that were set up for the end of March. These protests included a sit-in and a walk out, which did not take place. These protests, according to students on Facebook, may be rescheduled for April, around the time of the school board’s next budget hearing.

The meeting is scheduled for April 4 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium, according to the school’s web site.

When DiStefano was asked his opinions on the matter, he said he was unaware of the proposed sit-in and walk out. He thinks students will be more effective by not violating the code of conduct. He feels that by doing the walk out, students would be merely doing it to miss class.

“The voice of concern needs to be aligned with the issue,” DiStefano said. Simply, he continued, make sure you know why you are protesting. Is it for the teachers, or what are you protesting against? “Go to the budget hearings, talk to the adults, and get well informed before making decisions, before deciding to violate the code of conduct.”

As for the Facebook page, at which students are communicating and voicing their opinions, he said, “open communication is a good thing. I’m proud in the fact that students aren’t acting impulsively and are looking for answers.”

And about the tee-shirts?

“The shirts are a great idea, so long as the message is in good taste.” he said.
