The campus energy challenge, “Go Green Go Home,” was successfully finished and the campus met its goal of a a 5% reduction in electricity use. In recognition, Head of School Andrew Vadnais awarded a day off May 30.

Mr. Michael Benjamin announced to the school last week that 5.2 percent was saved from Oct. 15 to March 15, compared to the average usage over the last three years.

The goal was to reduce energy “in order to conserve scarce resources, save money, reduce air pollution, and learn how to live a more sustainable lifestyle,” Mr. Benjamin said in an email to the community.

“Thanks for doing all of the little things that make a difference,” he wrote. “Special recognition goes to the residents of Garfield dorm, where electricity use dropped by an amazing 21 percent,” he wrote. “Honorable mention to Gilder Hall, where electricity use dropped by 11.2 percent.”

Mr. Benjamin equated the savings to preventing  “about 15,000 pounds of coal from being burned and cut(ting) carbon dioxide emissions by about 40,000 pounds, the rough equivalent of taking three to four average cars off the road for a year.”
