The Student Parking Lot, down from Washington High School. - Chao Vang

Student parking has been a big issue lately. We have had many students parking in the upper parking lot rather than parking in the lower lot. But what exactly can be done about it?

Here at Washington High School, we have a parking lot around the school, which belongs to the staff. When you walk past the football field, you’ll see a big parking lot, which that belongs to the students. Every day, many students complain that their reasons of being late is not because of them arriving late, but because of the long walk to get to the school.

“I believe us as students should be allowed to park in the upper lot because we come in and it takes so much time just trying to get into the building. People get tardies because of that,” says Junior, Melody Herr.

Seniors this year had heard about getting special privileges involving parking in the upper lot as long as they kept their grades up and made it into the honor roll each quarter. But as it turns out, nothing has been done about it.

Mr. James, a World History teacher, believes special privileges should be taking place. “I believe that having special privileges could actually help boost students into doing good in their schoolwork. If they are being awarded for doing something good, it will help make them want to work harder.”

Having the privilege to park in the upper lot is a good thing. But to every good thing, is a bad thing.

“If students were to park in the upper lot, the worse that could happen would be that loud music would be played loudly, students fighting, and irresponsible drivers,” says Senior Aloyisious Horton.

The parking spaces around the school are limited. The more we have the students park in the lot, the lesser the space for the teachers.

“I think students who park in the upper lot should only park for specific reasons. Otherwise, I don’t think they should at all. It could get overcrowded and there wouldn’t be any parking spaces for us teachers,” says Mr. James.
