After his incident with the law, George Zimmerman was forced into hiding and thus unable to work. The neighborhood watch volunteer, who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in Florida, created a website to communicate to his supporters and solicit funds for his legal defense and living expenses. Trayvon Martin, a 17 year old boy, was shot February 26 in Stanford, Florida by Zimmerman who claimed it was self-defense. He had originally stalked the teen to see if he was up to no good as a recent string of burglaries had occurred in the neighborhood. He called the police, which had been his 46th call since 2001 to report mysterious people, irresponsible drivers, and other conflicts around his neighborhood.

“I think he [Zimmerman] was guilty because you can’t go around shooting people with hoodies that look suspicious” said sophomore, Christian Smith.

During Zimmerman’s call to the police he told them his suspicion and description of Trayvon and toward the end of the call he told the 911 dispatcher he had begun run.  He started chasing after Martin even after the 911 dispatcher told him there was no need to.

“I think he [Zimmerman] was guilty because the kid wasn’t doing anything, he was just eating skittles.” said freshman, Devan Anderson.

The homepage of the website, TheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com, featuring an American flag background, introduces an essay that explains his point of view on the situation and has an option to donate money. He claimed he was currently in hiding and has left his family, school and entire life. He also points out the money he has collected has not gone to him but to support his family.

Angela Corey, the prosecutor for Trayvon Martin case, had discontinued the case before a Florida grand jury but was still pursuing the investigation.  At first authorities didn’t pursue charges against Zimmerman which lead critics to believe the police department was guilty of racism. According to the Los Angeles Times, some inside the department tried to pursue charges but was overruled by local prosecutors.

But on Wednesday, April 11, Zimmerman was arrested and charged with second degree murder. He is currently in police custody and awaits trail.
