$0The Band and Orchestra Winter Concert began with an attention-getting string orchestra piece titled “Jupiter - Bringer of Jollity” by Gustav Holst after a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner by alto saxophone sophomore soloist Robert Larry on Dec. 3. $0$0Soloists made up a significant part of the performance, including junior violinist Nina Fricano, senior violinist Thaddeus Wasielewski, senior cellist Anna Stemberger, senior trumpeter Erin Baldwin, junior harpist Kathryn Widen and senior harpists Julia Beirold and Alyssa Lamberton. $0$0“The highlight [of the concert] was ‘Christmas - That Special Time of Year’ [by Calvin Custer] because I think we play it the best,” junior violinist Maureen Connolly said. $0$0“Everyone knew the music really well, but we could have played more together,” Connolly said$0$0The band and string orchestra only practice together once a week, so pulling all the music together proves a challenge.$0$0“The band kids in orchestra did well learning the songs with only a few rehearsals,” senior trombonist Matthew Gilly said. $0$0Although most holiday songs stay the same each year, soloist pieces added a new touch that kept the program fresh.$0$0“The ‘Concerto Grosso’ [by Arcangelo Corelli] and the harp solos were the highlights,” Fricano said. She adds that both the band and orchestra had high energy and good dynamics.$0$0“Kids always step it up a notch [for concerts],” Durr said.$0$0$0$0
