During senior year, many students fall ill with a sickness of senioritis. This sickness is highly contagious and can largely affect many undergraduate college applicants.
A large percentage of MLK’s high school for Law, Advocacy, and Community Justice seniors and teachers claim that this is becoming an increasing issue. Students are becoming lazy and slacking in classes which is causing their GPA to drop.
A low GPA during senior year can cause college administrators to take back acceptances.
Most colleges require a mid-year report and a final grade report, which are the final grades for both semesters of the senior year. Many students are either unaware of this or too excited about graduation.
“After Spring break, senioritis is hit like a brick wall” said Strong, Economics/Government teacher for LACJ. This statement leads to the question, are vacation breaks the cause of senioritis?
School breaks are given for students to take time off and rest. However, many students do not understand the idea of balancing this situation out.
“I suggest a healthy balance of fun and work so you won’t get lazy. Seniors who are graduating will be attending college the same year. It is important to take that year to actually become responsible instead of lazy, because college is all about independence and responsibility” said Chantel Watts, senior from LACJ.
“Anticipation can be deceiving, many students are anticipating graduation which is prolonging the process, also causing laziness. One who anticipates for a positive outcome, must work hard for it” said Tyrone Burrus, senior from LACJ.
For those who wish to attend college, it is important to stay away from senioritis and pursue onto working hard during their last year. The three years of work will come to no use if the last year goes downhill.
College advisor and senior class English teacher, Mr. G says, “Students are so oblivious to what is reality that they are letting a portion of laziness take over a big decision of their life”
“If students are becoming lazy now, then they are not ready for college. I don’t call it “senioritis” I call it lazy! College administrators are not looking for lazy students, they are looking for hard working and responsible students who are ready to learn and act as mature individuals”, said LACJ guidance counselor, Mia Bradford.
Senior student of LACJ, Jasmin Milam, expresses her thoughts about senioritis: “You know what it is, it’s stupidity. People need to stop complaining and being lazy."
