There have been many famous people that have disabilities that people would never think to call a "Retard" or "Retarded." If you won't say it to everyone, don’t say it to anyone at all. This word is very hurtful, which is why Mount Airy High School is encouraging every student sign a pledge to not say the "R" word. The school board is hoping to change the word "Retard" to "Respect."

Everyone should have respect for each other and this is what the pledge is designed to promote.  There are many mental disabilities and they are not anyone’s fault. Nobody can help what they go through or what they are born with, so they shouldn’t be made fun of or put down for it.
