Playground Games from Back in the Day
Games Everyone Remembers
By Katie Hodge
There are many games that a child from the 90’s may have played while out at recess and I’m sure they still remember. M.A.S.H for example, everyone has played M.A.S.H. at least once in their life. (Well, at least the girls have.) M.A.S.H. which stands for mansion, apartment, shack, and house is a game where one would write down boys’ names, houses, cars, jobs, children, wedding venues and many other things. These would then be used to predict the future.
Another game kids played in the 90’s and still play today is tag. I interviewed Reiana Barton (11) on the subject of tag and this is what she had to say, “I remember playing tag at recess everyday at school. It was the only game where everyone could play.” Red Rover was another game that, sadly, we didn’t play very often because there weren’t enough participants. When we did play, however, and everyone had a blast. Jump rope was a big thing when I was in grade school. I remember getting a book of rhymes from my grandma and bringing it to school so we could have new rhymes to jump to. There was the classic one rope when you jumped by yourself, the standard one long rope when you jumped with a friend, and the difficult Double Dutch when you jumped with two long ropes and maybe one friend. There are many games today that us kids from the 90’s have all played and still remember.
