90’s toys still create fun for all
By: JoAnna Muenks
From Furbies to Easy Bake Ovens, the 90’s had it all. There was a toy for every interest and every age. Many of these toys are ones we all remember and perhaps even still have today. Games like Mouse Trap, Pictionary, Ker Plunk, Hi-Ho! Cherry-O, and Hungry Hungry Hippos, never failed to keep us entertained. For the boys, they could let their imagination run wild with Hot Wheels and Tonka Trunks that could haul just about anything. Meanwhile, girls could stay occupied inside playing with an Etch-A-Sketch or the latest Barbie. “Barbies were my best friends,” stated Megan Pope (12).
Top selling toys for Christmases in the 90’s included Game Boys from Nintendo, Thunderbirds, Power Rangers, Magic Eye pictures, Toy Story action figures and dolls, Teletubbies, Yo-yo’s, and even the board game, “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire”. In 1996 when Toy Story toys’ popularity was at its peak, the toys were hard to come by because the company making them was too small to meet the demand. This was because all the other major toy companies turned down the rights to manufacture Toy Story merchandise because they didn’t think the movie would be successful. They couldn’t have been more wrong!
Even though some of these next toys didn’t make the top selling list of 1990’s Christmases, they were definitely still very popular. Beanie Babies for example were huge and came in almost any color and in any animal. And who could forget Pokemon? From the television show to trading cards, Pikachu was everywhere.
In conclusion, we all have our own favorite toy that we will never forget and that will always be a symbol of our childhood. Hopefully we can one day share these toys with the future generation and share our joy and memories with them as well.
