In
the past decade since his death, theories about late rapper Tupac
Shakur still being alive have surfaced. Tupac made his return a couple
of weeks ago at Coachella, not as many expected though. He made his
return as a hologram performing at an award ceremony with Dr. Dre and
Snoop Dogg. The three combined to bring back 90’s hip-hop hits,
California Love and Hail Mary, which ruled the rap scenes during the
famed east-coast and west-coast feud. Many were rejoiced to see Tupac
performing again and even made some in the crowd emotional. Tupac’s
return was bittersweet for some however. “Seeing him perform again is
great and puts a twist on new concert formats, but it doesn’t substitute
an actual performance by him” said gym teacher Eric Costanguy. “It made
me realize how violence ruined a great performer’s life.” Costanguy
continued. The performance should be one of many. The group who designed
the hologram is working on getting more performances by Tupac and
making them into holograms for concert dates. There has even been rumors
that he could potentially do a tour with artists like Dr. Dre or Snoop
Dogg. “I think if they did do a tour they could get a lot of money and a
lot of fans who would want to go see him” said sophomore Mark Kelleher,
“People in our generation were never able to see him live, but we are
still huge fans of his stuff.” Kelleher continued. There is no doubt
that Tupac still has a huge number of followers. Briefly after the
performance at Coachella, the music industry saw a sudden increase in
the late rapper’s album sales. Alone, the single “Hail Mary” sold 13,000
downloads last week, a 1,530 percent rise from what it was. The
substantial jump is what the creators of the hologram and producers at
the record company wanted to see. The actual makeup of the hologram is a
solid white sheet reflected by a mirror. This flaw doesn’t make it an
actual 3-D hologram, but rather a 2-D projection. The creators are still
trying to make it a 3-D hologram. People are wondering how realistic it
will look once it’s actually finished. Some people think that Tupac is
still alive, and actually recorded this performance, shortly before the
concert. Much of this speculation come from the beginning of the
performance when Tupac actually said Coachella. Although Dr. Dre said
this was a mechanically fill in, many still believe it was not. Another
speculation that has risen is will they do it with any other artists
that have passed away. “They should work on a Jerry Garcia hologram”
said sophomore Tom Crotty. No matter what happens with the Tupac
hologram development from here on out, there is no denying the hologram
was a huge step for the music industry.
