At-a-glance

Family vacations, camping, music festivals and hanging out with friends are the many things people commonly do over summer vacation. But some are taking part in more rewarding activities such as the international service club’s Jamaica Trip, Saint Francis de Sales work camp and other associations such as these.

Many of the volunteers at valley in the international service club decided to lend a hand to benefit others. “I just wanted to help someone in need and do my part” said sophomore Paige Colburn. Along with many other students Colburn will be going on the trip to Jamaica. “We’re going to Harmons, Jamaica for a week to help build and repair houses for the locals” said Colburn.

Junior Taylor Payne will be following in her sister’s footsteps by going to Saint Francis de Sales annual Work Camp. “My sister went the year before and I want to help out as well” said Payne. “We’re going to North Carolina to fix up run down houses for elderly and paint.  We’ll stay for one week”

However the Jamaica trip and Work Camp are not the only two service oriented organizations. Sophomore Bri Matthews will be traveling to South Dakota with Youth Works an organization devoted to helping people in poverty. “I just want to help out those family really suffering to make ends meet” said Matthews. “I’m going to Rosebud South Dakota for a week.” “I’ll mainly be working with children educating them and fixing run down houses” said Matthews.

Although many high school students travel over the summer and focus on having fun, some devote their own time to give back to others less fortunate and in great need.
