Spring Break has come and gone and the warm weather has contributed to the successes of the West Franklin Spring Sports Teams. With the first baseball and softball games and track meets upon them, the coaches and teams have set their goals high.
Assistant Softball Coach Michelle Giesy said her and Head Coach Kandi Lowe have set very attainable goals for this year. “We would really like to be in the top of the league this year and get our underclassmen experience. With only two seniors, the amount of leadership is low, but the quality is very high. When you’re out on the diamond, it doesn’t matter what your age is, it matters what skills you have.” They will work through the season to prepare to hopefully have a successful regional tournament.
Head Baseball Coach Ian Evans said, “We always expect to have a successful season, but how successful we are depends on our focus and how well we accept our roles within the team. The seniors this year bring energy to practice every day. They may enjoy practicing more than I do.” The baseball team’s biggest strength this year appears to be pitching depth. “We have six guys that are solid. We have a great infield defense, and with an improvement in hitting and outfield defense, we should be good.” The baseball team has high hopes for regionals this year too.
Head Track and Field Coach Susan Zentz is setting high expectations for this year as well. “I would like to see the boys’ team be more competitive this year with the higher numbers. The girls are down in numbers, but still have great quality, so I expect them to be competitive as well. I would like to see the teams more competitive at league and regional, with hopes of more state qualifiers. Some high points for the track team this year are a strong group of seniors with excellent leadership, and having a high amount of underclassmen to gain experience for the coming years. The senior group this year is also part of at least 10 different school records.”
All of the teams would appreciate any support throughout the season and have hopes for great weather through the remainder of the season to help achieve their goals.
