Chilton High School is looking at a one-to-one computing program, which would require students to each have a device with web access, such as a laptop, iPad or smart phone.
Although many people only see these devices in class as a major distraction, there are actually many different benefits to having the portable computers in front of students.
Laptops and other devices will aid the learning process. They will allow students to gather information in a timelier manner. Students will also be able to take better, neater notes that are readily accessible and able to be changed more efficiently than with pen and paper.
One-to-one computing is also beneficial because it will allow online activities to be done during class. Currently, there are five computer labs in our school, and that is hardly enough to provide the whole school with simultaneous access to the machines. Each student having his or her own readily-accessible computer will result in students getting the chance to learn more from multiple sources of information and, with time, cut back on the amount of late and missing assignments.
Introducing students to the use of their own personal computers in school will prepare them for college and some of their future jobs where computers are already practically necessary for survival. It will improve typing and computer skills. These skills will stick with students for the rest of their lives as adults in a society where such skills are required for success.
In the long-run, the use of laptops and other electronics in high school classrooms will be beneficial not only to the students, but also to society. These devices can be a useful organizational tool, learning aid and a fantastic way for students to gain the trust of the school by using the machines properly during class.
