We see them all the time, mopping up messes in the cafeteria, sweeping the halls after school, even replacing the dead light bulbs in the auditorium ceiling. As students, we often take for granted all that the custodians do each day; yet they are the school’s backstage heroes.
One custodian, Dave Goff, is finally stepping into the spotlight. He has volunteered to head the first chess club in the school. “It’s something the county advisor has been trying to start for a while now,” said Goff, “I think it’s a game everyone should learn.”
The chess club meets every Wednesday with twelve ambitious members. “I’ve always liked playing chess,” commented Junior, Grady Nock, “It’s a good way to meet people and stretch your mind.” In addition to playing, the members “log” each game in order to improve game skills. “Logging a game is like writing out every single move, to see which piece goes where.” Nock added.
Members of the chess club are excited for the opportunity to compete in school and even scholastic tournaments throughout the school year. Chess is a “very noble game” that promotes “good sportsmanship,” according to Nock, who looks forward to each meeting.
The addition of a chess club may very well promote good sportsmanship and even a sense of a tighter knit community in Rising Sun. Who knows, perhaps a member will become the next Garry Kasparov; the youngest world chess champion in 1985, at the age of 22.
