Prom may seem like a fairytale utopia to any average girl, but what exactly do guys think of the ever-so-magical night? It seems we all know that girls have been dreaming of their prom night since the days when they acted it out with their Barbie’s.
Is prom as important to guys as it is to girls? I have interviewed a few boys around Marvin Ridge High School, and many of them admit that they do not have high expectations for prom. The boys I have interviewed are way more excited about the after-parties than the actual prom.
Austin Todd said, “Prom is not really important to me. If I had someone to go with it would be a bigger deal, but I am just looking forward to the after parties!”
Chris Cooler stated, “Prom is important if you go with someone that is special and that you truely care about."
Justin Cude thinks of prom as “a time where you can hangout with your friends, make memories, go ham, and look really good doing it.”
I was also very curious about whether or not asking a girl to prom has some sort of competition to it. It turns out that most of the answers were around the same point, like Trent Baker said, "Yes, there is definitely rivalry between guys because everyone wants the best girl." In this case, it seems obvious the competition for the best prom date is starting soon.
Now guys, when the competition gets heavy, it is not likely you will get your girl with the mundane question: “Will you go to prom with me?” These days, expectations are high and girls are waiting for their man to ask them to prom in a way that will make other girls envy. A guy could do something cute such as personalizing the fortune in a fortune cookie to writing in the sand on a day trip to the lake.
What do guys think about prom?! One word… party. Guys do not absorb the spotlight when it is time for pictures and they do not take weeks to pick out the color of their ensemble. Ordinarily, they do not dream about how they wish the night will go either. They just listen to the stories and exaggerations of past seniors' extravagant party recollections.
Guys usually look at prom as a time and money drain. The guy has to ask the girl in a cute way, buy the tickets, corsages and limo, and purchase a tuxedo to match his date to the best of his ability. When thinking like this, it makes it easy to take pity for guys, yet they should take a glance at the girl’s side. Girls have to pay for their dress, shoes, hair, and makeup and are expected to look gorgeous for their guy from midday throughout the whole night looking flawless.
Max Valsov explained, "It sucks having to spend so much money on a girl when you are not even dating her."
Some other statements guys have made about the cost of prom is that even though it is ridiculously pricey, it is the gentlemanly thing to do, so they do not mind it.
I was wondering if prom is not important to them, why do they go?!
Matt Frein said, “Prom is just something that everyone feels they have to go to because they feel everyone is going. Especially since it is my senior prom this year, I would regret not going with everyone else.”
Matt Walser said, “I look forward to prom to get dressed up and go out to dinner with all my friends.”
It seems that guys fit the perfect sterotype when it comes to prom. A lot of guys are only going to make their girls happy since they know it means so much to them. Even though they do not admit, I find it hard to believe that they dread going. Prom has a hard tradition to be a great time for friends to party together their last time as a high school crew.
Guys need to get the picture that the girls will be taken fast, so they need start asking quickly. Prom for MRHS is May 22 this year. Let's make it special this year and make sure everyone has the great time it is organized to be.
