Simone Elkeles, author of the Perfect Chemistry and How to Ruin trilogies, came to Turner on March 9th. During third period, students school-wide met in the auditorium to listen to her presentation and ask questions, and potentially walk away with some literary swag.
"We won an online contest, and the grand prize was her coming to our school" says Mrs. Freeman, librarian. "She's going to talk to the students about why she writes, and maybe answer some questions."
Elkeles' novels- many of which have made the New York Times best seller list- stood under the spotlight during her appearance; during her brief stay at Turner, she spoke about her work, her writing, and her next steps.
When asked about why she wrote Young Adult novels, she had this to say: "It just flows. I write adult books, and it just doesn't work."
Post-presentation, Elkeles hung around to talk to her fans and sign books. She also stayed for another presentation, during seventh period, adjusted for a smaller audience. There, she answered questions like why she writes, who she writes about, and how she copes with the demands of being an author.
"It's hard... but it's like a snowball effect. If you get enough momentum, it's harder to stop." said Elkeles.
