Bam - the ball is in the net. That is at least what any soccer fan wishes for when they see their team play. With the GSHS girl soccer team this year, the wishes of the fans are granted.
Soccer has for a long time been a forgotten sport in the whole of the US but here it is a little different, with the team GSHS has this year it's with good reason “We have the potential to make it really far, if we just keep our minds at it,” Senior and Co-Captain Allie Rippy said.
This year the varsity team has a great mix of people, and with a mix of people comes a mix of talents, “We have a lot of depth in our team, we could take out all the starters and still have a great team” Rippy said, but she is not the only one who has a positive comment about the team. “We just have so much talent this year, everyone is so skilled,” junior and starter Erika Stripp said.
For a team having something stay the same for multiple years can benefit them greatly, especially if that something is their coach. The GSHS girl soccer team's current coach has been here for a couple of years now, and before stepping up as head coach of the varsity team he was their assistant coach for a number of years. “You gain familiarity, it progresses on from year to year. So instead of having to change our still every year we can continue on with what we worked on previous years,” Stripp said. But even though the team in some ways have stayed the same, they’ve also changed immensely over the past few years, “One big difference this year is more respect for the coaches, we have more potential for going far and know it, we are a lot more serious,” Rippy said. This year the team is striving high and reaching for their goals, “It's kinda been my goal throughout the years to beat Battle Mountain and go to a play-off game and to do a rainbow in a game,” Rippy said.
This year the soccer team has the potential too make it far, very far, they can make it all the way.
