The Eleanor Roosevelt hockey team is about as cold this season as the ice they play on but the members of the team still continue skating.

They have played “five games this season,” and according to senior captain and team goalkeeper Christopher Bonnell, victory has evaded them on every occasion. Bonnell has not won a game since he has been on the team as they “didn’t win any games last year,” he states and he was not on the team when they last won.

The team is a club team consisting of mostly Eleanor Roosevelt High School students with athletes also from Laurel High School, Northwestern High School, and Forestville High School. Bonnell says “even though we don’t win a lot of games it’s still fun,” which is why he still makes it to the Herbert Wells ice rink in College Park, MD for practice every Wednesday and suits up to play games Friday.

“I scored in the first game; it was like 0-7 and I made it 1-7 so the score did not matter I just went nuts,” Bonnell recalls as part of the fun that keeps him coming back.

The team was not always this way. “The team used to be good but it’s been less kids every year,” Bonnell says. The high cost to play the sport contributes to the depreciating interest.

No matter the score Bonnell always leaves with a smile on his face because “there’s nothing more satisfying than hitting a kid [on the ice],” he states enthusiastically.
