On November 2, 2010, Old Mill student advocate Mr. Young will run for District 32 of the Maryland House of Delegates on the Republican Ticket. District 32 currently consists of Democrats Pamela G. Beidle, a former owner of an Insurance Agency; Mary Ann Love, former Information and Assistance Specialist and Theodore J. Sophocleus, a former pharmacist.
The Maryland House of Delegates as a whole is 73.8% Democrat, and 26.2% Republican. But Mr. Young’s political party is not the only major difference between he and other contenders. His background is what makes his campaign truly unique.
“I started off as a blue collar worker. I was a custodian and a substitute teacher,” said Young. “I have one on one experience with the people I’ll be representing, [the other contenders] don’t understand what normal people go through.”
Mr. Young feels his connection with working class people gives him an advantage. He doesn’t want to be seen as superior to the average person.
“I’m on an equal plane with average people,” said Young. “Never in the history of Anne Arundel County has a person moved from being a school worker to the House of Delegates.”
Mr. Young also understands the importance of personally reaching out toward people, and using the assistance of students who support his campaign, even if they themselves cannot vote.
“My campaign is driven by the energy of young people. We’re out all the time waving signs and hands,” said Young. “Our small budget means we’re restricted to local media, but we have a unique campaign. Ninety-nine percent of the campaign is run by high school students, mostly from Old Mill. It hasn’t happened before, I definitely think it’s a positive experience.”
