Everybody had their favorite song in 2011, for some it was Nicki Minaj’s Superbass and for others it was the catchy tune of Give Me Everything by Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack, and Nayer. 2011 had some fantastic hits, but not all can be number one on Billboards Top 100.
When people think of 2011, they will think of Adele and her number one song, Rolling in the Deep. Its heart stopping bass and relatable subject, allow girls (and guys) to forget about their break-up woes and think about how the person shouldn’t underestimate them.
Lady Gaga was another contender in 2011. With dance worthy songs like Born This Way and Judas, and then uplifting songs like You and I and Edge of Glory, how can she not be considered one of the best?
Another number one artist of 2011 is Katy Perry, who had five number one hits from her album Teenage Dream, and those songs were: California Girls, Teenage Dream, Firework, T.G.I.F (Last Friday Night), and E.T. featuring Kanye West.
“My definite favorite song that came out in 2011 was S&M by Rihanna,” says Shea McGlone(10).
Rihanna was an artist who made an amazing showing in 2011. She produced songs such as: California King Bed, S&M, What’s My Name ft. Drake, Only Girl (In the World), and We Found Love ft. Calvin Harris.
Then there were some newbies in the mix for this year: people like Nicki Minaj broke free and joined the “it crowd” with her hit Superbass, Wiz Khalifa came around with his Steeler’s theme song Black and Yellow, and there was also a new alternative rock group with the happiest depressing song: Foster the People came out with Pumped Up Kicks, a song about running from a bullet and getting shot.
A front runner for Best Band of 2011 was Maroon 5. The band had the chart topper Moves Like Jagger ft. Christina Aguilera.
“Maroon 5 was definitely the best this year,” Jared Steede(10) claims.
The number one album this year was Adele’s 21 with the number one pop song Rolling in the Deep. The number one rock song was Rope by the Foo Fighters. The number one rap artist was Nicki Minaj, and the number one rap album was Lil Wayne’s THA CARTER IV.
However, not all songs were the best in 2011. Everyone remembers the poor excuse of a song known as Friday by Rebecca Black. Despite the hate the song got, it managed to be the number one song downloaded on Itunes that week. Another flop was Toby Keith’s Red Solo Cup. That song was just meant for a laugh and the artist didn’t like recording it.
2012 has a lot to live up to for the music industry. Can artists like Adele and Katy Perry keep their hold on the charts or will a newbie slip in and take their reign away? Only time can tell.
