On a wet Saturday morning students arrived at Luther Burbank High School to participate in a community event. The community and students were here to begin creating what will become the seed of a future Burbank Urban Garden (the BUG).
Science teacher in-charge of the agriculture area, Mayra Tellez, along with Ms.Bell, Ms.Yang, Pheobe Feeley ,a community volunteer, Ms.E and student leaders such as Kong Vang, Victor Medina, Chris Saechao and many more, helped lead a community of volunteers. Those were people from clubs to a special seventh period called Careers in Agriculture. This seventh period class along with the school of Luther Burbank and its community will help lead this garden to grow and prosper. This seventh period has been plotting the plan of renovating the "BUG".
The community garden was a real important event because Luther Burbank has a reputation for being a real bad school and maybe this will show people that Burbank is not all bad. Special guests showed up at Burbank Saturday. Top of the list was Dr.Mehmet Oz ,best known for "The Doctor Oz Show" and also founder of the health program that Ms.E is apart of. Another special guest was Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA basketball player and himself, a proponent of good health.
A special thanks goes out to Mr.Farley, Ms.Ramos, Ms.Sutin, Mr.Ramirez’ student teacher, and all of the clubs and small learning communities (SLC) that arrived to help, such as Key Club, Latino Unidos, and representatives from SLC 3, which is Criminal and Social Justice. Special thanks again goes out to Ms.E for bringing publicity and much help to the garden and special thanks also goes out to the principal, Mr. Ted Appel, who was also tremendous help around the garden.
None of this could have been accomplished without the support and help of everyone that showed up. This will be an important step for Luther Burbank High School.
