Kettle Run hosted the fourth annual “Food for America” Awareness Day here on the track on April 20. Every year the FFA sponsors this day to teach younger students about agriculture. Food for America Awareness Day lasts an entire school day, and the elementary school kids get out of school for an hour to visit the high school. FFA members have worked for the past several weeks to prepare for this.
A lot of the members really enjoy being in FFA and love getting involved with the community. Sophomore Michael Granche joined because he had taken some of Mrs. Brill’s classes and had some background with 4H.
Some members have even been in the club for four years.
“I joined FFA because I took an agriculture class and I’ve worked with animals all my life,” said senior Carley Pavan.
The theme for this year is “Virginia Agriculture” and each student who signed up to participate has a different subject. Each person had to create a poster to display subject. The subjects mainly are about the different foods in the area but also about animals too.
“I’m really proud of all my members,” said Meaghan Brill, FFA sponsor about the FFA, “they were responsible for making everything, I think they did a really great job.”
“I like to teach little kids about agriculture,” said senior Riley Deborde. “It’s fun and brings people together.”
“All the kids from Greenville come up to the shot put area at the track in rotations for about an hour during school to learn about agriculture and the importance of it” said Brill. Every year has a different theme, and each high school in the county (Fauquier and Liberty) has the same theme, but they all happen on different days. Food for America awareness day usually occurs in the March – April timeframe. The kids from Greenville will come up to the track in rotations. They go by grades, with their reading buddies. The kids will be there for about an hour while they visit each station.
“It’s a really long day, but it is always fun and exciting,” said Brill.
The FFA has this Food for America Awareness Day every year throughout the county. Each year has a different theme and this year’s theme is “Virginia Agriculture.” A lot of the members are really excited about participating and teaching the elementary kids all about agriculture and to display the posters they made, to prepare for this event.
