North Harford was down by 2 with a few seconds to spare. As the scoreboard clock blended from 1 second to 0, NH senior Rodney Barnett pulled up with the shot.
The NH varsity boys basketball team was playing Bel Air in the Hawks’ gym. As the last moments of the game were approaching, some people couldn’t watch, for it was too nerve racking. Just as it seemed we were about to lose, Barnett pulled up and shot from half court with approximately .2 seconds left on the clock . The minutes that followed that game winning shot are something most people only see in the movies. People streamed onto the court as if the stands were on fire.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said the coach, Jeff Burrows. “I saw Mr. Herbold run onto the floor and I just tried to find someone to hug.” Burrows also said Barnett works hard to be the player he is.
For Barnett, that was not the only time such an unlikely shot had gone in.
“I’ve made that shot twice during my summer league,” says Barnett. He added that he had the feeling it would go in.
The night of the event, Barnett’s shot had gone viral on Facebook. Proud friends and family will never forget that moment, but for Barnett, he was “just doing his job.”
