The race started back four years ago when Sunshine Bull was killed on the night of her bachelorette party.
After her death, Sunshine left behind three children along with a younger sister and her family. Brooke, her sister, and Vicki, her mother, wanted to help Sunshine’s three children get the help they needed to deal and cope with the loss of their own mother.
Mrs. Vicki Bull wanted to find a way to do this, so she started the Sunshine 5K run as a way to keep Sunshine’s name alive, and to help out all the kids who may be facing similar tragedies.
The money raised in the race will be donated to those who are grieving from a loss and who may need help to afford the financial parts that come with such a loss, including therapists or support groups.
The very first year the Bull family sponsored the race, they got close to 320 people to participate. In its second year, close to 350-360 racers and spectators came to help the cause.
Mrs. Vicki Bull has always hoped since the first year they put the race on, that they would be able to hold it on the day of Sunshine’s birthday. The third time is the charm; this year, the race will be held on July 15, Sunshine’s birthday.
"It’s a definite positive in helping us move on and to keep Sunshine’s memory with us," said Vicki Bull. "... It just feels great to be able to keep her name alive and know one day it may be known widely, especially to the three children she left behind, states Sunshine’s mother.
