Gossip
The culture, trends, and moral standards of american teens are constantly changing: and gossip, besides clothing and styles, seems to be the most evident.
Gossip and rumors are everywhere. In businesses, both large and small, in schools, the home, and is even shown on popular T.V shows. Teenagers are one of the worst for gossip. Part of the reason is because of our surroundings. When hundreds of teenage peers are put into an environment like high school it’s inevitable. Gossip will happen. When bombarded with this common but hurtful issue, a person has to wonder, why do we do it?
There are several things in the modern teens world that leads to gossip. The most used would probably be Social networking sites on the internet like facebook. On facebook the user is able to update their status and put any information they want on their page. A lot of the time the user gets too comfortable while posting, and thinks they can say things they wouldn’t normally say in person. Things we say online can also be taken the wrong way. When we post it is hard to tell if a person is being sarcastic, or if they are serious. When you are online be careful, watch what you say, and how you say it. Another thing to keep in mind is how it will affect the person you’re talking about. If you know what your saying will be hurtful then it’s best to reconsider. If someone confides in you be sure to ask them if they are okay with you telling other friends. Having respect for others is very important in a situation like this.
Students at Westville High School feel very strongly on this subject. One student John Yeager believes, “There is no way to avoid gossiping because people won’t stay out of others private business when they have no reason to spread it around. Sometimes it can end ruining the reputation of that person and make them socially uncomfortable.”
When asked if there was any way to avoid gossip, Stephanny Brown said, “We shouldn’t listen to gossipers.” She said it would avoid most of the conflict created because of gossip. Brittany Partain said, “No. Gossip is unavoidable. People thrive on gossip. Westville is bad about it just like any other small town.”
We should all be careful and watch what we say. Gossip can be very hurtful and be life altering for some people.
